Chateau Lagrange 2006

Introduction

Chateau Lagrange 2006 is a red wine from the Saint Julien appellation in the Médoc region of Bordeaux, France. The estate was recognized as a Third Growth in the 1855 Classification and has been under the ownership of the Suntory Group since 1983. The winemaking philosophy is rooted in 'uncompromising quality' and precision, utilizing a detailed map of 103 vineyard plots to allow for a made-to-measure approach to vinification.

Wine Description

This wine exhibits a deep, opaque purple colour followed by a lively sensory profile. The bouquet is vivacious, featuring scents of blackberry, cassis, and violet alongside complex notes of cedar, tobacco, espresso roast, and cigar box. On the palate, it is medium to full bodied with a fine grip and well judged acidity, displaying flavours of dark fruits and briary berries. The finish is vigorous and long, backed by tobacco stained fruit and refined, silky tannins. This blend consists of 59% Cabernet Sauvignon and 41% Merlot, a rare vintage for the estate as it contains no Petit Verdot. It has an ABV of 13%.

Food Pairing

The structured tannins and masculine personality of this Saint Julien make it an ideal partner for all types of classic meat dishes, particularly roasted or braised beef, lamb, and duck. It pairs elegantly with rich preparations such as veal cheek ravioli with wild morels or mallard duck breast with a dried cherry jus. The wine's earthy and tobacco notes also complement mushroom based dishes, pastas, and a variety of hard cheeses.

Vintage Quality

The 2006 vintage was a variable year for Bordeaux, following the exceptional 2005 season with more complicated weather patterns. A hot and dry July was followed by a cool, damp August, but a sunny September saved the crop for estates that managed their harvest timing carefully. Saint Julien was noted as one of the appellations least affected by these challenges, with Chateau Lagrange excelling through meticulous vineyard management.
